REPTON SCHOOL & REPTON PREP CLASSICS TRIP TO ITALY
During October half-term, a group of enthusiastic Classicists from Repton Prep and Repton School embarked on an enriching trip to Italy, exploring Rome, Pompeii, and the Bay of Naples to connect with the world of ancient civilisations.
Rome: From the Colosseum to the Vatican
The adventure began in Rome with a visit to the Colosseum, where pupils explored ancient architecture and the history of gladiatorial contests. Nearby, they visited the Arch of Constantine and immersed themselves in the vibrant scenes of Rome’s historic sites. Day two featured the Baths of Caracalla, a marvel of Roman engineering, followed by a walk around Circus Maximus, once Rome’s largest chariot-racing stadium. In Trastevere, Reptonians enjoyed a pizza lunch and delved deeper into Rome’s history.
The next day, the group toured the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon before enjoying a trattoria lunch in Piazza Navona. A visit to the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica followed, where they admired magnificent art and architecture in the heart of Christianity.
Ostia Antica and Naples
Sunday’s itinerary offered a shift in focus as the group travelled to Ostia Antica. Here, they explored the preserved port city that vividly illustrated everyday Roman life. They later continued to the Bay of Naples, setting up an exciting day of new discoveries.
Pompeii and the Naples Archaeological Museum
Monday took Reptonians up the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, giving them a view of the volcano that shaped Pompeii’s fate. A visit to the Naples Archaeological Museum followed, where they admired famous mosaics, statues, and Pompeian artefacts. A taste of the local delicacy sfogliatella added a delicious layer to their day.
Immersive Pompeii and Sunken Baia
The sixth day was a true highlight as our pupils wandered through the ruins of Pompeii, encountering the House of the Faun and the Garden of the Fugitives, and even visiting the home of Caecilius, a famous Latin study figure. The day concluded with a boat tour of Baia’s sunken ruins, where the group learned about volcanic activity that has shaped this area.
An Unforgettable Learning Experience
From iconic landmarks and historic sites to hands-on encounters with artefacts, our pupils enjoyed an immersive experience that brought ancient history to life, deepening their appreciation for the achievements and daily life of ancient Romans. The memories and insights gained on this trip will inspire them for years to come.
