SUPPORT IN THE HOUSE
Pupils have access to their House and boarding house staff throughout the day and for many of our pupils, their House is the natural place for support if they have a problem, with the Housemaster or Housemistress, Matron, Resident Tutor, House Tutors all on hand to help.
70% of Repton’s community are boarders, staying at school over the weekend. This allows pupils access state-of-the-art facilities at Repton at almost any time to boost their mental wellbeing – sport, music, art, drama – and provides an opportunity for pupils in their ‘free time’ to enjoy a huge choice of recreational pursuits, immersing themselves in their passions, trying new activities and, critically, finding a welcome counter point to academic studies. Moreover, pupil wellbeing is supported by a packed activity programme at weekends and regular off-site trips. We know that participation in whatever arena fosters wellbeing.
| How are students allocated to Houses when they join? |
The Admissions department will work to place students into Houses. These allocations will take a variety of factors into account to aim to ensure the best fit for the students and to ensure a balance of talents, interests and feeder Schools. The Admissions department will also ensure that there is an appropriate balance of day and boarding pupils in the Houses.
| Can day pupils request to be in a specific House? |
All day pupils are allocated into one of the 10 boarding Houses. There is not a separate day pupil House at Repton. Our ethos is to ensure that our day pupils are fully integrated into the life of the School.
| What are the sleeping arrangements in the boarding houses? |
The Juniors pupils will normally share in small “bedders” of up to 4, depending on House configuration. As pupils progress into Sixth Form they will move to single rooms or rooms shared with one other pupil. Throughout their time, day and boarding pupils can be placed together. Pupils have the opportunity to feed back to House staff on their rooming preferences at the end of each term.
| How often can boarders go home during term time? |
Repton is a full boarding School. We have calendared exeat weekends when all pupils in the School will leave for a weekend at home or with their guardians. These begin at 1pm on the Friday, with boarders able to return from 6pm on the Sunday evening. Pupils are able to take a limited number of privilege weekends each term in addition to the exeat weekend. These are arranged directly with House staff.
| What happens if my child gets homesick? |
There is lots of support available for pupils who are struggling with homesickness. This includes support in House from our Houseparent’s, Residents Tutors and Matrons as well as support from the team in the Health and Wellbeing Centre. We have developed a number of strategies to support a pupil who might be finding being away from home challenging and will always work closely with parents to ensure we have a collaborative approach.
| Are there laundry facilities in each House? |
Each House has its own laundry facility in the boarding House. The pupils will quickly get to know their laundry teams and really appreciate having this facility on hand for any last-minute requests!
| Can boarders have visitors from other Houses? |
There are designated slots for when pupils are able to welcome visitors from other Houses. They are able to be in the visitors common areas of the House and many enjoy this opportunity to mix with their peers from across the School.
| How do you handle discipline issues within the Houses? |
There are very clear processes and procedures in place for managing discipline in the House. These are clearly outlined under our rewards and sanctions policies. Serious matters will be escalated as appropriate. The sanctions used in the Houses follow an agreed structure and system. Our ethos is to ensure fairness and consistency in our application of discipline.
